My dream sleigh

Finally! The sleigh I have been dreaming of for so many years but never bought because of small amounts of snow and steep hills around our old barn. But now we are located in a hill-free paradise with direct access to both the forest and fields, and we even have a winter with plenty of snow!

Look how gorgeous it is!

It was restaured by the talented Bo Fellking in Brumunddal and I don’t know much about its history, but it was painted in a way similar to the Royal carriages and sleighs, wich is cool! Maybe it’s a proper princess sleigh.

The sleigh is also equipped with an artificial armory, made to scare away thiefs and bandits on the road. How awesome is that?! It’s not difficult to imagine this sleigh being used to transport people around in snowy, old Norway.

Welcome to the familiy, Iver

The madness! Yes, I bought a horse! Finally! Iver is a 3 years old Norwegian Dole Horse (Dølahest) and he is perfect. The Dole is a breed native to Norway – he’s a proper Viking horse! They are facing extinction, which is very sad, so I’m very happy to get a chance show the world what the awesome Norwegian horses can do! I have lots of plans for Iver. When he gets older we will hopefully be doing mounted archery, trick training, bridleless dressage, skill at arms and looots of other awesome stuff. But first: patience. Get to know each other. Take it step by step, slowly. We both have so much to learn and we have so many years to look forward to – why rush?
I have been trying to find a horse like him for a while now and am so happy I finally have our new familiy member here by my side.

He is after Nybakk Frøyar, one of my favorite stallions and is well built with long legs and proud movements. His trot and canter is amazing, he’s flying! He’s got the excellent honeybadger don’t give a shit-attitude and is smart, curious, willing and full of energy. He is safe and comfortable with his surroundings and had a great home with the previous owner. I really like this horse, and he’s been here for a few weeks already. It has been hard to keep it a secret but I wanted to wait untill every single detail was sorted out. I’ve actually been in the process of buying a horse since February. Will tell you everything about that later on!

Bat’s the best uncle and they are buddies already. Iver is 160 cm (15.3 hands) tall and is still growing a lot. Batman was 163 as a 5 year old so Iver is the perfect size. I can barely wait to see how he will develop during the next years. Thank you for all your congratulations!

Clinic with NMBU Hestesport

Last weekend was rather busy! First the Arne Koets-clinic on Saturday, and on Sunday I held my first clinic of my own.

Arranged by NMBU Hestesport, a group of Animal Science students, we had gathered 24 people in Vestby that morning. We had planned an inspiring day focusing on the relationship between horse and human and wanted to show some new ways to communicate with each other, with the basics of liberty training and bridleless riding.

We started the day with a demo with Batman. I first spoke about our journey together, and how he taught me a different approach. Ask, don’t demand. Play, don’t struggle. Have fun, don’t stress. Don’t aim too high only to be disappointed, take one step at the time.

We then showed the audience the large variety of movements and exercises that can be performed from the ground, and Batman did a good job.

Next up was Tussa, a lovely Norwegian Dole mare. She and her owner Nina had done some liberty training earlier on, and we decided to focus on the most important things of them all; body language and praise.

Most horses are taught to walk after the human, but being side by side in all gaits is an advantage in liberty work. Having the horse next to you instead of behind you give you the opportunity to mirror the horse’s movements – and giving the horse a chance to mirror yours.

With Nina and Tussa, we worked a lot with Nina’s position and energy, and as with most horses, Tussa did everything we asked and more.

After a lunch break with some theory, a lovely team I have been helping this fall entered the arena. Maria and Merel, a stunning Friesian mare, is working on bridleless riding and the basics of liberty work from the ground.

Last lesson I had with them ended with Maria trotting around bridleless for the first time. In a very new setting, with a large audience and heavy winds outside the indoor arena, we started with some basic exercises in walk and trot, with lots of transitions. Walk, halt, trot, walk. Merel need tasks to remain connected, and Maria must work hard to keep her energic mare interested. They did great!

After Maria’s lesson, I rode Batman and let two of the participants try him bridleless and in liberty, and we showed a small piece of the process of trick training a horse with pure positive reinforcement.

I’m very pleased with the day and was so happy to see so many people showing up!

I hope you found some inspiration or learned something! I wish you all the best of luck with your own horses!

Thank you so much for the amazing photos, Lisa!

My first talk: Instagram success

A few weeks ago, I stood on a stage and spoke to 180 marketing-people about Instagram, businesses and success.

A topic I have been passionate about for years. It was my first time on a stage, and it went great!

Most businesses in Norway do have an Instagram account, but the quality level varies. A lot. Many seems to struggle with adapting in the same tempo as the channel changes, and have no idea about what to do when they find themselves stuck in their 2015-strategy with zero comments and a way too low reach.

My best advice is to get out there and have a look at what the successful hobby-Instagrammers do. The business accounts have a lot to learn.

Most of them tend to fail with the basics, and I shared my best advice to get out of that «safe», but unhealthy bubble of «let’s continue doing what we have always been doing».

A huge thanks to my agency OMG and my awesome boss for challenging me, and to MFO for having us!

Peace, love and Friesian hugs,
Batman & Matilde
